Swallow Li San (燕子李三; "Li Three the Swallow") is a pseudonym used to denote one or several wall-climbing criminal(s) responsible for numerous thefts and robberies in North China and Central China in Republic of China (1912–1949). After each theft by "Swallow Li San", an ''origami'' of a swallow was left at the scene, hence the nickname. The original "Swallow Li San" is believed to be Li Jinghua (李景華), who was trained in martial arts at the Shaolin Temple. He was eventually apprehended and sentenced to 12 years in prison on January 24, 1935, and died in prison. However, even after his arrest, copycat criminals continued to leave paper swallows at crime scenes all around the country, and gradually "Swallow Li San" became one or several folklore hero(es), since most crimes were, for obvious reasons, committed in premises of rich people.
